New traffic law mulls harsher penalties for serious violations

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 29:First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and Defense Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousuf confirmed that the new traffic law will be announced in the next few days; indicating this law stipulates harsher penalties for serious traffic violations that endanger the lives of road users. In an exclusive statement on the sidelines of the security campaign that he supervised in Hawally on Saturday, Sheikh Fahad Al- Yousuf explained that the main goal of enacting the new traffic law is to protect the lives of road users from reckless drivers. He stressed that anyone who abides by the law will not be subjected to severe penalties.
Regarding the security campaigns that he supervised for two consecutive days, he affirmed these campaigns are conducted round the clock by the field security agencies in all governorates. He disclosed their goals include closely monitoring the security situation and arresting violators of the Residency and Traffic laws, reckless drivers, and anyone who violates the laws of the country. Meanwhile, Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic and Operations Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Major General Yousef Al-Khadda reiterated that the new traffic law stipulates penalties for serious traffic violations like speeding, beating the red light, parking on the space allotted for the disabled, reckless driving, not wearing the seat belt, and using a mobile phone by hand while driving.

Al-Khadda added the General Traffic Department (GTD) has started installing and operating 252 cameras for recording serious violations like not wearing a seat belt and using a mobile phone by hand while driving. He revealed all of these cameras will be fully operational within the next two months. He also affirmed that the traffic control cameras and traffic surveillance cameras linked to the traffic control room are operating efficiently around the clock. He explained that the new traffic law is primarily directed at anyone who does not respect the law and endangers the lives of other road users by committing serious traffic violations. He said the Public Relations and Security Media General Department at the ministry will conduct a comprehensive awareness campaign to clarify all the provisions of the new law and amendments to the fines for serious traffic violations.
